Airport Runway Concrete Slab Thickness

SEI was contracted to perform a GPR survey on approximately 350,000 square feet of the airport’s concrete taxiway.  The purpose of the survey was to determine the thickness of the concrete over the entire area. 

Approximately 13,750 linear feet of transects were scanned using a Sir-3000 digital control unit and a 1500-MHz antenna.  This antenna was selected for it’s high resolution combined with moderate depth of penetration capabilities.  Depths in nanoseconds were converted to depths in inches based upon ground truth locations (random core samples over the site).

The results of the survey revealed concrete thickness over the entire area measured to within 0.5 inches.  A contour map of the apparent concrete slab thickness was created from the interpreted GPR data.  The field work was completed within two (2) days, and the report completed within one (1) week.
